No Sound on DVD Created From .avi file

Please help. I have spent hours creating clips from my mini dv canon
camcorder into a movie using windows Movie Maker. The video and audi look
great but when I tried to burn it, it turned out to be 5.2 GB long. So then
I split it into 2 parts. I converted the first part ( a little of 2 GB in
size) to DV- avi and then went to burn it using Sonics MY DVD that came with
my Dell computer.

The disc burns but when I go to play it on my dvd player, there IS NO SOUND.
I tried about 8 dvd discs by Dynex. They are DVD+R discs. I tried the
discs on 2 separate DVD players but still no sound.

The size doesn't necessarily matter, the length of the video does. You can
fit two hours on a DVD....

You save your DV-AVI file from MovieMaker, then open your third party
software, import the DV-AVI file and tell it to make a video DVD. It
re-encodes the file so the 5.2gb is not indicative of what will fit on the
DVD.

My real issue was with the sound but now that you bring up the size, I know I can make it reduced to fit the DVD but I really do not want to lose the quality of the DV -avi format so I am forced to split the video ( about 48 minutes worth) into at least 3 DVDs. I am not missing anything am I?

Cari or someone else: I just tried instead to put the remainder of the
video in one avi file and it says it will be 48 minutes long and is about 9+
GB avi. When I then go to My DVD(Version 5 but I do nto think Deluxe
version) to burn it , I get an error message every time I put in a DVD +R
disc that says " Wrong MEdia Type. Please insert a recordable DVD media".
WHat is going on? WHy will it not record? I thought a DVD could handle less
than an hour of video in an avi format without sompressing it sho much it
sacrifice quality. Help please.

A couple of helping hints.

dv-avi = 13gb per hour
mpeg2 for dvd = 4gb per hour at best quality

There or thereabouts.

You cannot retain the quality of the dv-avi by having to compress it this
much.

Saying this though, a really good encoder willl do such a good job you will
hardly tell it has been compressed, most consumer authoring apps will do a
job that most consumers are happy with.

Maybe the disc you are trtying with is faulty, it's not a name I'm familiar
with. Burning dvds is very dependant on quality of disc, apps used, burner
and player, and is a veritable minefield of problems.

As for the audio.

Is your audio in stereo?
WHat type of audio did you burn? was it mpeg/pcm/ac-3, not sure if you can
choose which you have in sonic, but all players will play pcm, most ac3
hardly any mpeg.

I finally got audio by burning just the video separately from the video and
then I guess Sonic combines them (DISC 1). Remember, I am using AVI and hear
the audio when I first save the movie before I burn it.

In any event, that DVD produced sound. AND THEN WHAT WAS REALLY STRANGE
was the other DVDs that did not produce sound before, now did. BUT IT GETS
MORE STRANGE.

I then burned another DVD for the second part of the movie (DISC 2). It
took about 45 minutes to load. Tonight, when I put DISC 2 in the dvd
player, it produced no sound. (NOTE: I did NOT split the audio and video
like I did for DISC 1). OK so no sound BUT HERE IS THE STRANGEST THING.

I put in DISC 1 and all of the other versions of Disc 1 and now none of them
produce any audio. I also tried them in another DVD player. This is
dumbfounding.

If there is a private non-forum e-mail address where I can give you my work
e-mail during the day so that I can communicate with you during the business
day, please advise. I am trying to get this done in the next 2 days for
relatives for Christmas.

What is the brand of your DVD player? Does it state what format of DVD it
will play (ie DVD-R or DVD +R). I am using MyDVD v 4.5 and havent' had any
issues with home movie DVD burning. Try your disks in Media Player or
whatever DVD viewing software (Power DVD, etc) you have on your PC and see if
you get audio on your PC. If I understood your posts correctly, the audio,
has come and gone on some disks, based on what 'other' disks you have loaded
in your player.

I am going to guess that you have a flaky player and low to mid quality
discs at best. I have used Sony discs and haven't had a problem. I've also
used Comp USA DVDs and have had some success.

Also, remember what has been said here. As long as your DV-AVI file is no
more than an hour or 13GB, it should fit on a single DVD. No need to split
it. In fact my version of MyDVD has a little graphic at the bottom left in
the DVD project screen, that shows me how much space is left on the DVD. It
is using the expected compression #s. For example, it starts at 4.7GB. I
import 2 movie clips at 4 GB a piece (8 GB total) and it might say I
something like I have 1.5GB remaining free. Your version, 5, should have the
same graphic.

Graham - one other point (evven if you cannot answer my sound issue)- if I
want to split the second part of the movie (45 minutes) into two parts, is
there an easy way with Movie Maker to find the end of a scene in the middle
and then cut it in half? I have tried to drag the little red arrowed clip
splitter from a spot to the end but it will not let me do so. I also went
up above to the task bar under "Clip" to hit the "Split" button but that is
grayed out. Thank you sir.

HDMI (only 6 months old). I was using Dynex DVD+R discs. Should I be using
DVR- discs?

Steve - by the way, my Zenith DVD player is also decent quality. It has
MP3, DTS, etc. In any event, I just tried it again and now it worked again
with both the Dynex DVD= R as well as a Memorex DVD-R that I just purchased.
Could the unit be somehow be reseting what it reads at times??? Remember,
what did not work on the Zenith also dod not work on the SOny DVD player but
now works on both.?????
