Default Volume Control Icon

Here is what is happening: I tried to place the volume icon control in the
taskbar, and it said I had to install a file. I tried to install sndvol32,
as directed by microsoft, and it said that it cannot read the output file.
Now what do I do?

I am having the same problem except I'm not getting an error message when I
reinstall sndvol32. The sound works fine, just no tray icon. Enabling the
check mark does no good. Reinstalling the file does no good. Does this have
anything to do with installing SP2? That's the only change I made to my
configuration.

With me the Volume Control icon sometimes disappears from the System Tray
(bottom right, near the clock). I then go to Control Panel |
Sounds_and_Audio_Devices | Volume, then uncheck and (re)check "Place volume
icon in the taskbar". That works with me.

Sidebar:
A long-time annoyance of Windows is, that not the full set of System Tray
icons shows when the system had to perform certain tasks (like completing
installation of new software) at start-up.
My trick:
I wait till the hard disk activity is over (System Restore point or new
bootlog made?), then log out and in again. (In my XP Home (English) logging
out can be done pressing Windows, L, L without waiting. The subsequent
logging in appears quicker than normal.)

I figured out what I was doing wrong- where I typed system root, I was
supposed to type the letter of the hard drive- oops. Jason.

I tried everything mentioned here with no success. I'm beginning to believe
that it has something to do with the installation of SP2 cause that's when
the problem began. Similar problem with missing installed printer icons in
printer folder and missing network connected icon in system tray.

I see that I did not mention SP2 in my answer to Jason. I do run XP Home
with SP2, and installing SP2 caused me no harm.

But I can accept that others do suffer from installing XP2. :-)
And I can see from the results of registry checks that installing any
software hardly goes faultlessly...

I have SP2 installed also, and my volume icon is safely [usually hidden] on
my taskbar. However, I do have a problem with something *changing the
settings* frequently, which I've learned to live with, since there is a
keyboard button to change it. :\

There are a lot of articles in the MS KB about this volume icon problem
though, so it's definitely not a rare problem. I'd try Google also.

Looks like I found a fix that has worked for me...I uninstalled SP2. Guess
I'll have to install the individual updates separately. With it gone, all my
missing tray icons returned, my printer icons returned to the folder and
problems I was having reinstalling my scanner are now gone!

That's great! It's a shame that you have to go to so much trouble, as so
many have unfortunately. Personally, I shudder everytime I get a new MS
update message. Hope that's the end of it for you.
