My speakers were working fine. Tonight started loud hum. did all
troubleshooting I could find. Changed speaker system to 4 speakers, hum stopped. Changed back to 2 speakers & no hum BUT no sound. Tried restore on computer. Checked all connections. Plugged in another pair of speakers (that work) & no sound. Tried Cd's & music files on computer, nothing. Also computer is not making it's normal sounds, ex: when starting dial up, no dial sounds. Any ideas?? |

Your Speakers have become UNPLUGGED, slightly. either at the back of the
computer or at the first speaker. The Hum is caused by a break in the shielding of the cable (also the Ground). Try pushing the plug into the jack and the hum should go away. If as you say you checked ALL connections, open your computer and be sure that the Sound Card is properly seated in the Slots and that ALL internal connections to the Sound Card ar plugged in where they should be and snug. It is a connection. -- I Have forgotten so much of what I once knew. "A Stranger is a Friend you haven''t met yet." "IdaKay" wrote: > My speakers were working fine. Ok I tried the cords, etc. Tried another set of working speakers and still no
go. Darn. Next step is open up the computer, anything I should be watching for or to be careful of. I have never done this, but am willing to try. You checked the Volum levels with the Volum control? you said you have tried
different cords and made sure they were plugged in snugged? you said you tried different speakers. SO speakers are definetely ruled out and so isn't the cord. but..... are you 100% positive you have it plugged into the correct jack? not the mike jack or the Line In but the speakers or line out? OK! if you are sure of all of the above and have even tried Restore, which should have defaulted back in case your driver got corrupted, then Yes! open the computer, with a light look at the card that has the speakers plugged into it (be sure you ahev no static build up and use No magentic screw drivers etc. Now, examine the card and how it is plugged into the slot. Once you feel you understand. Push on the back edge and the front edge to be sure it is seated properly into the receptacle. You may have to loosen the screw first to do this, I would even go so far to say, take it out and boot your machine and then power down the computer and install the board back into the slots and reboot the computer again. Maybe Plug N Play will pick up on it and re install it. If you want to be sure it is down proper, Uninstall the files for the board. Click on Start, Click on Control Panel, Click on remove software, Now scroll down to the title of the board you have, read it to be sure it is the Boards drivers and not some extra software, highlight it, and click to uninstall. Turn OFF the compiuter, remove the board, boot and ignore and power down again. Install the board, have the CD handy, that came with the board/computer and re boot and follow instructions. This will reinstall the drivers. This is the complete way and if the board is not fried which could be the case, should get you back up and working. Before doing this, if you are uncertain or not comfortable, make sure boarded is seated first and then if all else has failed do the removeal and the re-install. good luck -- I Have forgotten so much of what I once knew.
