Default Sound skips or misses intermittently on audio cd playback

Using media player 10 (and 9 bafore this), sudden miss in playback. This
keeps time, just misses a few phases or notes. Lasts from 1 - say 5 secs,
can happen a dozen times in a 2min track. Any good fixes?

Bill, fixes for what? Are you playing music/songs from your harddrive,
CD-Rom, MP3 player or some other external device? More info needed
to furnish a possible "fix" or any assistance. We are not mind readers.
It could be a bad CD, CD-Rom needs cleaning, your harddrive has bad
sectors or or or.........etc.

Sorry, forgot to read the rest of your subject and see it is a CD problem.
Haven't had my cup of coffee yet to wake up and open both eyes.
Check the below website, under More information, the 4th item.

Tried Sound troubleshooter, no use.
Tried different CDs, tried different cd drives, tried different media
players, all give the same result. Almost as if something is polling the
internet and that process cuts out the sound for that period of time. I've
closing down other progs that were running in the background, tried
disconnecting the internet connection, switching of anti-virus software still
no difference.

Any more ideas?

It could be some other program causing this, but by what you tell me,
it sounds more like your soundcard is biting the dust. Is it onboard (mobo)
or is it a PCI card? Check eBay for good deals. Before you buy a new card,
open the PC case and check if your card is seated properly if it is a PCI
card.
To disable other programs that may be causing the problem, go here:
Start>Run>type MSCONFIG>click OK>Startup tab>uncheck everything except
your anti-virus program>Apply>Close>reboot
