asks for a Password for the shared resource on the XP host, the problem is, I
have not set up any type of password on the host computer for file sharing.

What can solve my problem?

You have to set up a username and password on the XP machine.

If you set up a username without a password, clients will NOT be able to
connect with that user name.

You must supply a password to make this connection.

resource: \\Livingroom\ipc$

Password:

(clicked ok)

the password is incorrect, please try again.

See the problem is, When i set up the network, all was fine, client could
access host shared files, until my dsl was disconnected, and upgraded to
cable... Then 98 client asks for pw to access shared on host.

I just dont understand what changed to make client ask for pw. Client CAN
access internet through host connection, just cannot access any shared
resource on host.

I did that, and it doesnt work, logged off on the client, and logged back in,
still asks for the same thing...

That's Win98's cryptic way of telling you that the XP host denied
access because it didn't recognize the user who requested it.

If the host runs XP Home Edition, make sure that the Guest account is
enabled for network access and that it doesn't have a password:

1. Click Start | Run, type "cmd" in the box, and click OK.

2. Type this line at the command prompt and press Enter:

net user guest /active:yes

3. Type this line at the command prompt and press Enter:

control userpasswords2

4. Click Guest.

5. Click Reset Password.

6. Click OK without entering a new password.

If the host runs XP Professional, check the setting for "simple file
sharing":

1. In My Computer, click Tools | Folder Options | View.

2. Scroll to the end of the list of advanced settings.

3. If "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" is checked, follow the 6
steps above.

4. If "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" is un-checked, create an
account on the XP Pro host with the same user name and password that
you use to log onto the Win98 machine. If the shared resources on XP
Pro have the default "Everyone" permission, that will solve the
problem.
