Can someone please help me instead of telling me to do something, and then
not going into detail as to how to do it??

I have a windows XP host computer that is connected to Cable internet, I
also have a Windows 98 client that can connect to the internet through the
host, but when I try to access the shared documents folder on the host
through the client, It asks for a password.

I did not set up any kind of username\password in order for the network to
be connected initally, and I had no problem accessing the shared documents
folder on both computers from both computers.

Then I disconnected the Modem (dialup) from the phone line, (with the
network still connected) and installed a Cable modem.

From that point on, The client computer (win98) has not been able to access
the shared resources (except the internet) on the host computer.

Someone told me earlier that I needed to set up a username\password to make
this happen, but as i have said, Initally i did not do that for it and it
worked fine...


Plus the fact that I have done just that now, and I am still unable to
access the shared resources from the client computer.

Michael,

Is the XP "host" computer running XP Home or Pro (and if Pro, is it using Simple
File Sharing?)? These are essential details in your case. If SFS is involved,
installing a "username\password" won't work; you'll have to activate Guest
instead.

Your problem is not so rare that it hasn't been written up. Please read my
tutorial (following the links in the article!), and I believe that it will help
you.

Is it okay to leave the pw blank?? and if so, can they login with any
username??

OK, with SFS, the Guest account is used for network access. You still can setup
non-Guest accounts for local access. Use password or not, at your preference;
just make sure it matches when an account is used. Consistency is best.

OK, let's start from the beginning. Can you ping the host from the client? Can
you net view the host from the client? If not, provide complete and exact text
of error.

Run "net user guest" in a command window. Does it show "Account active Yes"?

Check registry setting restrictanonymous.
