I am using Windows XP professional With SP2. Iam having a DSL connection.Iam
facing a problem recently. After connecting to the internet, if I try to open any applications like notepad, yahoo messenger or even taskmanager... they don't start. After some 5 - 10 mins they all open at once. After that period everything goes on well without any problem. I have Trend Micro Pc-Cillin installed with the latest updates and there is no spyware detected. I thought of reinstalling XP and so I performed a clean install of XP.. After Installing when I connected to the internet, I found that the problem no more persists ( which is quite expected ). So I moved on to install the essential softwares which included Yahoo!(7.0 beta) and McAfee(10.0.21). After installing McAfee it asked me whether to replace Microsoft's Security Center with McAfee Security Center- I clicked yes. When I restarted my system I found the same problem come up again and I thought of uninstalling McAfee and Yahoo! but the problem dint go.. So out of frustration I reinstalled XP once more. This time I was even more careful. I installed XP and Yahoo! thats it. The system is going on perfectly. How can the installation of a antivirus lead me to such a situation.?? Is it because Security Center is replaced?? If so, What is the solution.. because its not feasible to continue browsing without having an antivirus support.. and all antivirus asks for replacement of Microsoft Security Center so as to avoid duplication of error messages. Right now my system has only yahoo! installed. Iam not able to install any antivirus.. Please help me on this problem!! -Karthik |

Karthik, I feel with you, but the answer is that McAfee (like Norton) are pieces of software that are no longer recommended by the experts. The stuff is simply bad. For virus protection you can use various programs, many free, for example AVG Free from http://free.grisoft.com/ . For firewall protection just use the built-in firewall of Windows XP with Service Pack 2. Of course there is usually a way to fix the software, but I don't know it, and I don't think we should have to do that. Why do you have to install Yahoo software? I wouldn't like that either.
