Default ICS instruction conflict

I've been experimenting with ICS on my home network. I have 2 pc's XP Pro +
dial up modem, and XP home. The two computers have a stable netowork
connection between them.

I've found that if I tell the xp home machine to obtain an ip automatically,
which is the client, then ICS works fine. But if I assign a static ip address
to the xp home client machine then ICS stops working. In the past I've always
told the client machine to obtain an ip address automaticall, and this works
90% of the time, but I found a tutorial on the microsoft website and a few
other windows help sites that state that a static ip address can be used on
clients, if they are in the range off 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.254. Heres an
example off the tutorial I followed.

To connect to the Internet using the shared connection you must first check
the LAN Adapter IP Configuration then configure the client computer:

1. Log on to the client computer as Administrator or Owner
2. Click Start > Control Panel
3. In Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections and next,
click Network Connections
4. Right-click the connection that you use to connect to the Internet, and
click Properties
5. On the General tab, in the This connection uses the following items
list, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties
6. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, check Obtain
an IP address automatically (if it is not already selected), and then click
OK

Note: You can also assign a unique static IP address in the range of
192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254. For example, you can assign the following
static IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway:

IP Address 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.1

7. In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box click OK
8. Close the Control Panel
