Default Connection Problems

My girlfriend got back to her dorm and her internet wouldn't work, but
her roommate who was on the same connection, same router and modem, and
her computer worked fine.

I told her to restart her computer, reboot the router and modem. She
did that several times. Her roommates connection is fine, hers is not.

It says that she is connected. She can send packets, but not receive
them. She has an IP address and it says that she is connected.

"Your computer appears to configured properly but QIC is not receiving
a response from the server. Make sure your cable modem is plugged in to
the correct network port...blah blah blah."

She has Insight Broadband and they have been less than helpful.

The funny thing is- she goes to another person's house and plugs her
internet in and it works like a charm.

She is calling me every five minutes and I am at a loss.

Any help would be awesome.

Have her run "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" in a command window on both
computers, and you post the contents of both "c:\ipconfig.txt" here. That will
give us a starting point. A description of both computers, and the network,
would also not be useless. Please read my articles.

Chuck-

I had her run the ipconfig /all and she read to me the ip address.

It started with 10.xx.xx.xx

I remember reading on Insight that it should only start with
12.xx.xx.xx

For some reason it is not obtaining a IP address as per their website.

http://help.insightbb.com/troublesho...heckip_xp.aspx

So, at least she has something to tell them when she calls tomorrow.

If you know of anything she can do tonight that would be helpful.

Ryan,

So far, you have not provided any details. Do us both a favour, and read the
articles I provided above.

If you can only provide her one thing, give her the address to my blog:
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/

We can probably help you here, but you have to help us to help you.

Problem solved.

She has been using a switch for the last three years instead of a
router.

For some reason it was working for a couple months and now it doesn't.

She can directly connect through the modem now after doing ipconfig
/release and /renew.

But, looks like she has to buy a new router or pay 6 bucks a month for
an IP.

Sorry for the lack of info but she had no way of sending me the log
file, because she couldn't get on the internet.

Ryan,

Great. Thanks for the update. If she asks you for a recommendation, tell her a
router is a far better solution than a second IP address.
