I have home network setup using home network wizard. Works OK.
Is there a way for me to restrict/allow internet access to individual user while retaining network access for same user? Also is there a way place password restrictions on some shared network resources within the home network and maintain access to others at the same time? Only two computers on network, both running XP |

If you have XP Pro with Simple File Sharing disabled, you can restrict access to any network resources that you wish. With Simple File Sharing, which is optional under XP Pro and forced on you under XP Home, any network resource accessible to anybody is equally accessible to everybody. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Simple> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...xp.html#Simple -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. Thanks, we have the file/ resource sharing under control now. Still need to
have control over the internet sharing to keep kids under control. Is there a way to put a password on network connections as well? Brad,
For Internet access restriction. You might consider purchasing a router. Many of the major brands, can be set to block access on a scheduled basis, usually under "parental controls" or "filter" settings section of the router. If you decide to use a router, make sure that you add a password to the "admin" logon, to help prevent "unauthorized" changes to the router's settings. -- Add MS to your News Reader: news://msnews.microsoft.com Rich/rerat (RRR News) <message rule> <<Previous Text Snipped to Save Bandwidth When Appropriate>> > On Mon, 14 Nov 2005 06:17:02 -0800, "Brad n Mich" > <BradnMich@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > > >I have home network setup using home network wizard. Brad,
I too had problems finding any information on this hub, it seems that I can't find anything about it even on the D-Link website. Get yourself a 4-port router, since you say your network only consists of 2 PC's. There is really no need for a 16-port hub. Even if you wanted to, I believe that you would need to install a router anyway. If you have or plan to buy a laptop/notebook now or in the near future, consider buying a wireless router now. Best Buy has a Belkin for US$39.99. Belkin Wireless-G Router with 4-Port Switch Model: F5D7230-4 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1099392876098 Belkin instructions for filter settings, to block access for above router: http://www.belkin.com/support/downlo...4_man_6-04.pdf pages 70-74 in the PDF reader. I personally can only recommend Belkin and D-Link, based on personal use. When looking at different, check the online for the manuals, and check out any settings for parental controls or IP filtering features on the router. Most should have them.
