I'm having trouble with my master browser under Win2k3 Server. I ran the commands below directly on the browser server (bobox), and get the 'Status : 6118' situation. Any ideas? > browstat.exe status Status for domain BOBO on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{F272768C-F5F2-4A17-B5B4-BF958BFF7C8A} Browsing is NOT active on domain. I am only using Windows ICF on BOBOX. I have disabled it, and tried making sure file and print sharing is allowed through, with the same results I'm running a Workgroup, Bobo, and no I don't have a DC. Is there any more information I can provide that might help?
I've looked at NetMon sniffs, and observed that indeed the client (virtxp) does issue netbios broadcast announcements to signal its netbios name, but the server (bobox) makes no effort to pick it up and add it to the table. Here are the steps I performed: - First, I observed that there are traces of an ethernet device that I had removed from the system many months ago. This device did not show up in the device manager or in ipconfig/browstat listings. Nevertheless, the system was apparently keeping the driver around, and registered, just in case I ever brought it back into the system. This may have been interfering with the proper function of the master browser (though I have no theory why). Here are the two pieces of evidence of the device I observed: 1. When I tried to update the TCP/IP settings for the current device (I use a static address), I received a warning, saying: "Another device [3com 3c9xx etc] which is currently not active in the system has the same tcp/ip settings as this device. If this device becomes active again, this will result in a conflicting IP address. " (or something to this effect). 2. When I updated my Virtual Server installation, Virtual Server installed a Virtual Machine Network Services driver for the phantom device. The VMNS driver was visible from device manager, whereas the phantom device was not. This didn't seem kosher at all. - Second (arcane), making a play on my hunch, I scoured the registry for all traces of this phantom network device; first I searched by name to identify the associated key names and GUIDs, then I searched for the keys with the GUIDs and deleted them. I confirmed this cleaning process was successful, because the two pieces of evidence above no longer presented themselves. The browsing problem was still ocurring at this point. Rebooting was of no help. - Finally, I disabled/re-enabled the Local Area Connection which should have hosted the active browser all along. Immediately, after this final step, browsing began to function. It only occured to me to try this last step today, but I did the first two steps a week ago. It's not clear whether the first two steps were even necessary here; it may be that disable/re-enable would have fixed it by itself, but I'm relatively sure I have tried this before to no effect. In any case, I could not be more pleased. > browstat sta Status for domain BOBO on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{F272768C-F5F2-4A17-B5B4-BF958BFF7C8A} Browsing is active on domain. Master browser name is: BOBOX Master browser is running build 3790 1 backup servers retrieved from master BOBOX \\BOBOX There are 1 servers in domain BOBO on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{F272768C-F5F2-4A17-B5B4-BF958BFF7C8A} There are 1 domains in domain BOBO on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{F272768C-F5F2-4A17-B5B4-BF958BFF7C8A} The question: "Why is a master browser active or not active on a particular transport?" doesn't seem to be answered very well by existing diagnostic tools, or even in commonly documented troubleshooting steps. Yet that was the key question here. Browstat on bobox showed that bobox was the browser master, but that browsing was not active on the domain. In effect, bobox couldn't even browse itself. Why? Why is it even active now? I wish browstat would answer these questions. In this case at least, the rest of the network appears irrelevant to the answer. Thanks, John |
