Hello,
My name is Rolf. I have two computers running windows xp professional. One
is in my dining room and the other is in my bed room. i have them set-up in
a workgroup, they are connected through a switch and the dsl modem acts as
dhcp. Both computers can touvh the internet. the computer in the dining
room can can acess the computer in the bedroom, but the computer in the
bedroom refuses to see the computer in the dining room. Both computers are
running zonealarm. i setup the dhcp to cycle through 10 ip adresses and
setup zonealarm to allow the ip ranges. the computer in the bedroom is
running AVG free for anti-virus and the computer in the dining room is
running Norton anti-virus. does anyone know why my bedroom computer can't
see the dining room computer?

Did you set up a small home network? In order to access other computers on
the network you have to set up network on each comuter.

Can you ping the computer in the dining room, from the computer in the
bedroom, by its LAN IP address?
Have you set up the appropriate exceptions in your Zonealarm?
If you want to browse the network or access/ping by name, make sure each
computer has "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" ticked in its TCP/IP properties...

Rolf,

There are a number of possible reasons for a lack of symmetrical access. The
most likely is AVG or Norton (yes, the AV on one could prevent visibility of the
other), but there are other possibilities. Start with my troubleshooting guide:

i have netbios over TCP/IP enabled and i can ping the dining room computer
using both the ip adress and the computer name. i just can't see it or
access it for that matter. i set the ip range on zonealarm to include all of
the ip addresses that the dhcp cycles through (if that is what you mean).

Rolf, you mentioned having Norton Antivirus. Is this a current version,
2005 or 2006? Those versions have "Internet Worm Protection" which is a
simple firewall. That may be interfering with things since you have
ZoneAlarm. Also make sure the Windows Firewall is off. Having multiple
firewalls on can certainly cause your issue. And of course, you did
share out some resources, right?

hello,
i have turned off nortons 2005 (i had to shut down the services[what a pain
in the butt nortons is]) and the firewall. i just pinged the other computer
using cmd. i did a search for a computer on the network but it only found
the bedroom computer. I think that i will shutdown then try again.
