I have two computers equipped with Win XP / SP2 - desktop computer (XP Professional) - laptop (XP Home) I have used 1394 connection succesfully and reliably for almost two years between these computers to transfer on-location recordings and photos from laptop to desktop computer... just plug the cable and the network is working. However, after running Windows Update after October 12 last month (thats the last date, when the connection has worked) , the 1394 connection no longer works on either machine. I havent't changed any settings... Control panel->Network Connection-> 1394 conncection: Connection status for 1394 connection on both computers show: - no Address type - no IP address - no Subnet mask - no default gateway Details window shows no details And "Repair"-button gives an error message (same thing in both machines) "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection. Cannot proceed" ipconfig does not list 1394 connection at all (it used to work as well). TCP/IP settings for desktop computer: - IP Address 192.168.0.1 - Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 - Default gateway 192.168.0.1 - Internet connection sharing enabled TCP/IP settings for laptop - IP Address 192.168.0.2 - Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 - Default gateway 192.168.0.1 Any ideas? Already tried "netsh winsock reset catalog" on both machines, but with no change. For me this looks like a buggy update, but I don't have any means to determine which update has caused the problem. Best regards Miika |

The date may be significant, since that is the approximate date many cable
operators enabled DRM, and set non broadcast digital channels to 5c and copy once or copy none. Without a cable card, the firewire ports may be disabled, send encripted data, or disable after a few minutes. Some reports seem to point to WMP 10 as part of the problem as well. Your exact problem seems to be that the firewire ports are not configured for network use. I had the opposite problem in that they were enabled by default, and I use an ethernet port for LAN connections. You will likely first need to check My Network properties to see if the 1394 port is disabled, and likely re enable it. The 1394 properties should allow you to setup TCP/IP, etc. "Miika Asunta" <miika.asunta@saunavahti.fi.nospam> wrote in message news:dmlbda$ba1$1@phys-news4.kolumbus.fi... > > I have two computers equipped with Win XP / SP2 > - desktop computer (XP Professional) > - laptop (XP Home) > > I have used 1394 connection succesfully and reliably for almost two years > between these computers to transfer on-location recordings and photos from > laptop to desktop computer... just plug the cable and the network is > working. > > However, after running Windows Update after October 12 last month (thats the > last date, when the connection has worked) , the 1394 connection no longer > works on either machine. > > I havent't changed any settings... > > Control panel->Network Connection-> 1394 conncection: > Connection status for 1394 connection on both computers show: > - no Address type > - no IP address > - no Subnet mask > - no default gateway > > Details window shows no details > > And "Repair"-button gives an error message (same thing in both machines) > "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action > cannot be completed: TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection. Chuck, I don't see any relevance here... internet connection is of course done with an ordinary ethernet controller. (besides I have xDSL). It is impossible that settings of network operator could affect computer's configuration... and totally different network driver. Please stay within the topic - I need to get my 1394 (Firewire) network connection work ASAP. Really there are no answers?!?!?!?!!? In the meanwhile, I found this: Discontinued Support for IP over 1394 Updated: December 8, 2004 In future versions of the Windows operating systems, Microsoft plans to discontinue support for IP over 1394 (that is, TCP/IP over IEEE 1394). Currently, this capability is supported in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows Me. Microsoft has not identified any customer dependency on this capability. If you are an IHV or OEM who has a business dependency on this capability, please provide feedback to netdd@microsoft.com. |

On the "General" tab, you should see a list of "components used by this connection." Is TCP/IP in the list and checked? If not, click on the "Install" button and install it. Without looking at my own 1394 connecttion, I can't tell you if you have to further configure this connection, but I suspect not. As far as the update is concerned, go to windows update and click on the "review your update history" link. This should tell you what update you installed on Oct 12. -- p |
