I'm sharing a data folder in Windows XP and I wanted to make users on other
computers input a password to access the folder. With Windows 2000 I was able to input permissions and passwords for users\user groups when I shared the folder. In XP, once I share the folder it seems like everyone in the workgroup can access the folder on my computer. With Windows XP I think you can only setup users as administrators or limited users and you do not get an option to enter a password on the shared folder like you do with permissions\user groups. From what I can see, you need to have a domain in order to setup user groups and permissions and I do not think you can create a domain in XP like you can with Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003. Is there anyway for me to require others to input a password to access a shared folder on my computer? Thank you Ron Lowe and Malke for your prior replies. Since my last question was not clear due to the fact that I added it to a prior post, I reposted the question in a seperate post. Paul |

With XP Pro and Simple File Sharing disabled, you can have the same as with Windows 2000. With XP Home, you're stuck with Simple File Sharing. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...indows-xp.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
