I have 2 PC's on a network using XP Home.
They are both connected to a D-link Router - IP address 192.168.0.1 Both PC's have fixed IP addresses - 192.168.0.2/3 and are configured to use the router as a gateway to the Internet. Both PC's can use the internet OK. In Network Neighbourhood both PCs see and can access each other. My problem is that when I use 'Ping', both PC's can ping their own internal IP address, the router, and out on the internet, but when I try to ping one PC from the other the ping times out. Neither PC uses Windows firewall. - which is turned off - both using the firewall built in to my antivirus software. The ping times out if the firewall is turned on and also when it is turned off. I have checked the settings for TCP/IP on both PCS and made sure evertyhing is set (to my knowledge) correctly. One of the PC's is new and came with XP home installed on it, the other PC is one which came from my office where it previoulsy had XP Pro on it, (I formatted the drive and put a new install of XP Home as the XP pro license for the previous installation was not mine). When XP Pro was on the second pc before, Ping worked perfectly Ok in the office network. I am totally puzzled by this problem and wondered if anyone could give me some pointers as to where to look next to resolve the problem. |

Most likely it's your firewall:
1. Many firewalls have the capability of blocking ICMP echo (ping response) - frequently this is the default configuration. 2. Many firewalls cannot be effectively 'turned off' despite the manufacturer's claims. 3. The way you enable ICMP echo is product specific - consult the manual. You could try uninstalling the firewall or possiblly booting into Safe Mode with Networking.
