Default TCP/IP Settings change back to "Obtain" after setting manually

I've got an XP SP2 machine on a 2003 AD domain. Running Ipconfig says the
machine has a static IP set, but when you check the network adapter tcpip
properties, it shows the machine is set to "obtain" ip and dns settings. If
you go in an manually set the IP and DNS settings, click OK and OK, you can
ipconfig and see the settings you just made. If you go back in to the nic
adapter properties, its changed back to "obtain". If you ipconfig, it still
shows the static info.

Check the scope on the DHCP server, see if it has available addresses. Check
the log on the DHCP server, see if any entries refer to the mysterious XP
computer.

Check the settings on the XP computer, see if it has entries on the Alternate
tab.
