Long delay finding host- name resolution problem on multihomed computer.
I have a 2 computer SOHO network consisting of one Windows XP Home edition w/SP2 computer named BRUCE and one Windows 98SE computer named FRED. BRUCE is a multihomed machine with 2 NICs: a 3COM connected to the cable modem and a LINKSYS connected directly to FRED via a crossover cable. Both machines also have PPP modem adapters. ICS is active on the 3COM on BRUCE. The problem: a long delay for BRUCE to find FRED in Network Neighborhood and Windows Explorer. This causes a real problem when FRED's printer is selected from BRUCE because the print module freezes while waiting/trying to find the printer, crashing the program. There is no delay when browsing BRUCE from FRED or any problems using BRUCE's printers from FRED. There is no problem (delay) browsing FRED from BRUCE if the network share shortcuts are used in Network Neighborhood or Windows Explorer. ICS works fine. Bruce can't ping FRED by name. It can ping FRED's ip address. FRED can ping BRUCE both ways. If I set a default gateway on the Linksys adapter's TCP/IP properties to 192.168.0.1 (using the add button) Bruce can ping FRED but I lose internet connectivity through the cable modem. Removing the default gateway on the Linksys adapter brings back cable connectivity. With a static IP BRUCE links FRED to the Comcast Internet account (fred.hsd1.ma.comcast.net). I need to know how to change this so BRUCE looks for FRED at fred.mshome.net @ 192.168.0.95. I believe the 65.30.0.0 address (noted below) is a Comcast (Cable internet) address. I am working on a clean machine. I formatted and clean installed XP on BRUCE 10 days ago. I have made minimal network setting changes since then. I used Network Setup Wizard to create the network. NSW created a fixed IP address for the Linksys adapter on it's own. History: I once had a well working network using this same setup on a XP computer with an on-board Intel Pro/1000 Adapter Gigabit LAN controller and the Linksys NIC. The cable modem was connected to the Gigabit controller and the Linksys was connected to the LAN. That motherboard died. A new MB was installed w/o an on-board LAN and the 3COM card was added in addition to the original Linksys. The 3 com was connected to the cable modem and the Linksys was (again)connected to the LAN. A repair install of XP was performed. The network would not work when I reconnected everything. A phantom device (Gigabit LAN controller) had laid claim to 192.168.0.1 and the new adapter couldn't use it. The phantom device was found and removed. The network was connected, but only by setting the IP address to static on the Linksys. I lived with the delay problem for several months. Last month I attempted to fix it. I made several changes, fixes (LSP fix, socket fixes, netsh resets, remove and replace cards) but no effect. I then formatted the drive and clean installed XP. It seems to me that I need step by step instructions on how to set up both adapters and ICS so each NIC only addresses the needed gateway. TCP/IP seems to default to only one gateway. I'm obviously missing something (obvious?). I found a tip suggesting that deleting a HKLM key will solve the problem "fix browsing delay to Win98/ME computers". Would like to check other possible fixes here before I go deleting registry keys. Also, some people (Carey Holtzman) say a node type: "unknown" is not a problem on SOHO networks. Others seem to feel the registry fix is needed. Is there a consensus? If manually editing the routing table is the best solution, how do you do it? I don't exactly understand what I'm reading when I look at it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ************** IPCONFIG /ALL on BRUCE with IP address fixed at 192.168.0.1 Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : BRUCE Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : hsd1.ma.comcast.net. Check the binding-order for the two NICs on BRUCE. The local subnet one
should be first. If not you will get exactly these symptoms as any name-resolution requests will go 'up the pipe' first and only then onto the local subnet. |
