Good Evening All -
1. Purchases two new HP Pavillion PCs - have two eMachines - all with XP SP2. One Linksys Hub - Cable for internet connection. 2. All PCs connected to the internet just fine. 3. Run the "Create Home Network Wizard" - when provided for the option to create a disk - I do not see my DVD or CD drive as a choice - so I assume that I don't have to create one, as all PCs are XP - so I say no and finish Wizard - this is obviously not the solution. 4. Questsioned someone (you know the one - that knows enough to be dangerous and destroy all in their path) why no CDs came with the new PCs - they said to create one through some place under control panel - not very explicit with instructions - sort of a blah blah blah... so where to go to now - I would like to understand why I don't see my CD drive as an option (I do see it in Explorer and am able to run DVDs and CDs - the system sees them and there are no 'exclamation points' indicating a conflict or problem of sorts) and would love to get these things connected to share my other limited resources of printers/fax and files... |

With Windows XP, you just run the Network Setup Wizard on each computer. The setup disk, created by the NSW, is to run on computers running operating systems other than Windows XP, where you can't run the NSW. If the computers connect to the Internet, but can't share files, it's likely not a problem that will be resolved by the NSW. It's probably a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, but there are other possibilities too. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/1...isibility.html If no help there, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Thanks Chuck - I was checking out some of these links you posted already -
after seeing your response to someone else - with a same, but different (wink) problem. Let me attempt to apply this information (correctly) to arrive at a solution... Okay - I did the best that I can - I apologize if I did not follow things properly - but this is what I came away with - I have removed all but two PCs - to make it easier to set up - then once these are working I can incorporate one PC at a time. Both PCs are brand new - MS Windows XP - Media Center Edition Ver 2002 SP2 HP Pavilion AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3700+ 1.78GHz, 960 MB of RAM Physical Address Extention I ran the ipconfig as you requested and have the following information - please note that I was not able to run the "browstat status" - I read your section on PATH - but still could not locate it Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. Try:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. Click Add or Remove Programs. 3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components. The Windows Components wizard starts. 4. Click Networking Services (but do not click to clear the check box), and then click Details. 5. Click to clear the Peer-to-Peer check box. If IPv6 Internet Connection Firewall is also listed, click to clear this check box as well. Then click OK. 6. Click Next. 7. Follow the instructions on the remaining pages of the wizard to remove the component from the computer. I did as suggested - and still no change - Man, I must be messing up big time. I read through the suggested webpages - from Chuck - and tried as he recommended - I must be missing something really simple... "Doug Sherman [MVP]" wrote: > Try: > > 1.
