I have a new laptop with XP Home connected wireless through a router with a
desktop computer running Win98. I am trying to share files but am having
problems.
I can see the Win98 computer from the Laptop as part of the workgroup but I
cannot get any shares. I can not see the laptop from the desktop.

I was running the network wizzard on the XP machine and it got to a point
where I was asked to create a Network setup disk to run on the 98 machine. My
laptop does not have a writeable drive so I could not create and I did not
get XP disks with the new computer. Any idea where I could get these disks or
is there a better way to get these two to communicate?

You can copy the Wizard's executable file to a CD or to a USB flash
drive and run it on Win98:

C:\Windows\System32\Netsetup.exe

It isn't necessary to run the Wizard on Win98. You can make the
network settings manually. Go to Control Panel | Network and:

1. Add these network components if they aren't already present:

TCP/IP protocol
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

2. Remove these network components if they're present:

IPX/SPX protocol
NetBEUI protocol
Client for NetWare networks

3. Set the workgroup name to the same name as the Windows XP computer
uses (default for XP is MSHOME).

Make sure that the firewall programs on both computers are configured
to allow access on the local area network.

I have another problem with printing.
I have a HP PSC 1210 connected through a USB port on my 98 machine. When I
try to print from my laptop through the printer share I get this error :
Error writting to USB001 for the printer due to an unknown system error.

Is it possible to share up a printer connected through a USB port and have
it work?

You're welcome. From that error message, I think that the laptop is
trying to access the printer through a local USB port. It should be
accessing the printer over the network. I'd un-install the printer
and then re-install it as a network printer.

Sorry I was not clear, the error was coming up on the desktop that has the
printer connected to it. The laptop does not have any errors.

OK. I'd un-install and then re-install the printer on the desktop,
then share it with the same share name as before.
