Default \\<self IP address.>\C$ doesn't work

Hi,
I have a strange problem. I have bought a new Dell inspiron 9300 with
windows XP pro.
It has a wirelesss with a bluetooth. I have a Netgear router. The
problem is -

When I use wireless connectivity then the ip address is 192.168.1.3
and
\\192.168.1.3\C$ it finds the C:\ directory successfully.

However when I use the wired connectivity (thru cables) the ip address
is 192.168.1.4 and doing \\192.168.1.4\C$, it doesn't find
itself.

I have other problems in networking this machine with other machines
but I think solving this problem may solve other problems too

I think you'll find this is pretty-much standard behaviour, my W2000 laptop
does the same thing, it has two distinct IPs for wireless and wired, and the
other machines can't 'see' it for a while after a change of connection-type.
Basically, netbios resolution takes time to sort itself out after a change of
IP address. You can try issuing NBTSTAT -R to see if this speeds things up.

BTW, not related to your question but it would seem from the mention of C$
that other machines are accessing the share on the Inspiron under an account
which is has Administrator priveleges over the computer. This is very unwise
from a security point of view. Apart from unrestricted disk access, it may
also give them the right to remotely modify the Inspiron's registry. Share a
specific folder instead, and grant access via an account which is not an
Administrator of the Inspiron.
