Hi,
I have a problem: I bought a new router and now I occasionally receive the
message: Work Offline - No connection to the internet is currently available.
I am usually browsing the internet when this happens and may have pasued to
read a page (maybe 30 seconds since last click). When I click Try Again it
always work. I have searched the forum and found no clear answer to this. I
am running XP Home SP2. I am connected via an old SMC NIC. My Win200 laptop
which is connected wirelessly does no seem to suffer this problem.

I am wondering:
a) Where does the system decide if the connection is lost (at card level,
internet explorer)?
b) Are there any settings that I should tweak to automatically have the
system Try Again to get a continued connection? Is there a utility I can use
in the background to keep the connection current?
c) My NIC's settings in HW Properties has only the Line Speed option to
change. The currently set option is TP Half Duplex. Could/should this have an
effect?

Basically no, none of these should affect the connection-reliability to any
significant extent.

It's the browser which decides how long to wait for a reply from any
webserver.

I would check for spyware or an advertising-parasite on the machine; this is
often the cause of unreliable connections. Use Spybot Search & Destroy, or
Ad-Aware. Both are free. There is also a Microsoft malicious software removal
tool, haven't tried it yet but it gets good reports.

Once you've done this, get Firefox, Mozilla or Opera. Only use Internet
Explorer if you must.

If this only started after adding the new router I would expect that the
router is the problem. Replace it.
