Default loss of ethernet card recognition

Ever since I installed win xp sp2, there is nothing in my network connections
folder, and my ethernet card has disappeared. The ethernet card still works,
but I have no way of disabling it (which I do when I shut the computer off)
because the system says it's not there. But I'm using it now to post this, so
it is there. I've also lost the notification box in the taskbar (the 2 blue
computers lighting up when communicating with each other). Anyone with the
same problem, or is this the way it's supposed to be now, and if it is, what
to do to get rid of sp2.
