I recently updated a PC from Windows 2000 to XP. It is on a LAN with peer to
peer networking. Since updating this PC, I can acces one of the other PCs but not the 3rd. I can no longer see the shared files on that PC nor can I log into it when I double click it's icon in the workgroup. I can however see the files if I boot this upgraded PC in safe mode. In safe mode, I am logging in as the administrator. Prior to the upgrade, all work on this PC was done under the administrator account(not smart, but I didn't know better.) I have added new accounts after the upgrade and it is from these accounts that I am trying and failing to find the shared files on the 3rd PC. Given that it works in safe mode, I don't suspect a firewall or file sharing problem, right. Any suggestions on where to look? |

Any suggestions on where to look? Ed, One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, but there are other possibilities too. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/1...isibility.html If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely: <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...#AskingForHelp -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. Chuck,
What follows are the results of the “browstat status” and “ipconfig/all” commands for the 3 computers on my network. My complements on your excellent procedures. I relied heavily upon them to obtain the data. All 3 computers are running Windows XP Ver 2002 with Service Pack 2. The network began as a 2 PC network, Frontoffice and Backoffice, each running Windows 2000. The 3rd PC, President was added via a wireless link. This was a new PC with Windows XP SP2 out of the box. Full bidirectional file and print sharing worked between all of the PCs. Backoffice was first updated to XP followed some time later by Frontoffice. Bidirectional file and print sharing work between Backoffice and Frontoffice. However, from Frontoffice and Backoffice, the shared files on President are not available in “My Network Places” and neither can log into President even though there are accounts on it for each of them. President can however access both Frontoffice and Backoffice. I suspect that bidirectional sharing between Backoffice and President broke at the time that it was updated but I can’t remember testing it. To the best of my ability, I have configured the firewalls correctly. In fact, I have tried turning them off and the symptoms have not changed. Each PC runs Norton anti-virus and Frontoffice has Norton Internet Security package. I have disabled the firewall in this package. I also checked “restrictanonymous” on each PC. It was zero on Frontoffice and Backoffice and [value not set] on President. I set it to 0 there and rebooted the 3 PCs with no change. The wireless link does not seem to have an impact because I have replaced it with a long cable over desks and around corners. Thanks in advance for your help. I hope that this pinpoints the problem. I hope that this pinpoints the problem. <SNIP> Ed, Well, to start, turning firewalls off is not always the best solution. Either un install them, totally, using procedures supplied by the vendor, or configure them properly. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...ther-help.html Now, if your computer runs Norton Antivirus, check the anti-worm protection. That includes a component that affects file sharing, similar to a firewall. Finally, let's enumerate the symptoms. Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify computer names and ip addresses). 1. Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary. 2. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder "C:\". 3. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag". 4. Wait patiently. 5. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post. Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online. ##### Start CDiag Assembled Code @echo off set FullTarget1=backoffice 192.168.1.2 set FullTarget2=Frontoffice 192.168.1.100 set FullTarget3=president 192.168.1.7 set FullTarget4= set FullTargets=%FullTarget1% %FullTarget2% %FullTarget3% %FullTarget4% set FullTargets=%FullTargets% 127.0.0.1 set PingTargets=www.yahoo.com 66.94.230.32 192.168.1.254 Set Version=V1.33 @echo CDiagnosis %Version% >c:\cdiag.txt @echo Start diagnosis for %computername% >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Enumerate Shares >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt net share >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Adhoc Browser View >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt net view >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Full Targets %FullTargets% >>c:\cdiag.txt for %%a in (%FullTargets%) do ( @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Target %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo "%computername% ping %%a" >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt ping %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo "%computername% net view %%a" >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt net view %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt ) @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Ping Targets %PingTargets% >>c:\cdiag.txt for %%a in (%PingTargets%) do ( @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Target %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo "%computername% ping %%a" >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt ping %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt ) @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo End diagnosis for %computername% >>c:\cdiag.txt notepad c:\cdiag.txt :EOF ##### End CDiag Assembled Code -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
