I have 3 pcs on my networ .. 2 * windows 2000 + 1 windows xp sp2
The windows 2000 pcs see each other and can open each others shared directories ( via network places / computers near me ) I also see the windows xp machine on both windows 2000 machines but cannot open it .. says ... not accessable . the path was not found ... For some reason the network installation assistant on windows xp does not support windows 2000 ( seems to support all other windows versions :-) ) all I want to do is see my three pcs from each machine in the "network places / computers near me" directory .. chris |

Start with the XP firewall - if it is enabled, make sure you allow an
exception for file and printer sharing: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/843090/en-us Doug Sherman MCSE, MCSA, MCP+I, MVP "chris a" <chris a@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:1D3E13F5-D46A-479D-8C21-FFD18CEA17EC@microsoft.com... > I have 3 pcs on my networ .. 2 * windows 2000 + 1 windows xp sp2 > The windows 2000 pcs see each other and can open each others shared > directories ( via network places / computers near me ) > I also see the windows xp machine on both windows 2000 machines but cannot > open it .. says ... not accessable . the path was not found ... > > For some reason the network installation assistant on windows xp does not > support windows 2000 ( seems to support all other windows versions :-) ) > > all I want to do is see my three pcs from each machine in the "network > places / computers near me" directory .. > chris > |

I have a similar problem. I can access my XP pro computer (files and devices)
from W2K pro (all current SPs and updates installed). However, when trying to connect to W2K from XP I am getting a dialog box asking for a password. I have never set a password on neither machine for any of several user profiles. See my posts *home network problems* yesterday and *a question to Chuck* today (where current ipconfig files for both computers are posted. Firewalls on both computers are currently disabled, i.e. PC-cillin on W2K and PC-cillin and windows firewall on XP. Any help will be greatly appreciated. -- JanAdam "Doug Sherman [MVP]" wrote: > Start with the XP firewall - if it is enabled, make sure you allow an > exception for file and printer sharing: > > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/843090/en-us > > Doug Sherman > MCSE, MCSA, MCP+I, MVP > > "chris a" <chris a@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:1D3E13F5-D46A-479D-8C21-FFD18CEA17EC@microsoft.com... > > I have 3 pcs on my networ .. 2 * windows 2000 + 1 windows xp sp2 > > The windows 2000 pcs see each other and can open each others shared > > directories ( via network places / computers near me ) > > I also see the windows xp machine on both windows 2000 machines but cannot > > open it .. says ... not accessable . the path was not found ... > > > > For some reason the network installation assistant on windows xp does not > > support windows 2000 ( seems to support all other windows versions :-) ) > > > > all I want to do is see my three pcs from each machine in the "network > > places / computers near me" directory .. > > chris > > > > > |

I have solved my problem. I am very sorry for bothering everybody. It has
never occurred to me that one has to type the user name into the popping dialog box even if no password was set. Everything seems to work just fine. Also, many thanks for your help and time spent on my stupid problem. HAPPY NEW YEAR -- JanAdam "JanAdam" wrote: > I have a similar problem.
