Default XP Home Logon Failure to Network Attached Storage Device

I have two XP Home computers and two XP Pro computers on the same network I
want to use with DLink DSM-G600 Network Attached Storage Device. The NAS is
setup to require authentication and uses its own users and passwords by which
to authenticate. The names and passwords used on the NAS are different from
those used to login to the XP boxes. The XP Home machines are on the same
workgroup as the NAS and the XP Pro machines are on a domain. I can go into
network places and enter the NAS logon credentials in my XP Pro boxes and it
works fine. On the XP Home boxes, there is no add button for adding
authentication credentials for Network Places, only edit and delete buttons.
When you double click the network object to logon, the logon prompt does not
allow you to change the username provided of DSM-600\Guest, but provides a
field for a password. I have went as far as entering the user name Guest in
the NAS, but it still will not authenticate against the box. I am pulling my
hair out trying to get around this problem. Any help would be appreciated
before I go out and get XP Pro upgrades.

Default RE: XP Home Logon Failure to Network Attached Storage Device

Anything to do with a limit on the total number of networked devices that can
be seen by WinXp Home ? Originally we were told the limit was on the number
of connected computers. I am beginning to wonder if networked stand alone
hard drives and network stand alone printers are counted in this total ?
Anyone know for sure ?

Default RE: XP Home Logon Failure to Network Attached Storage Device

There are four shares (created by the NAS, one for each user) and a upnp
device (again the NAS) showing up in network places on the XP Home unit. The
XP Home unit only uses one of these shares.

I'm not aware of a limit on the number of networked devices that can
be seen by any version of Windows. Where have you seen information on
such a limit in XP Home?

I'm sorry, but I don't know anything about the D-Link DSM-G600.

Have you checked the product's User Manual? Can you define the same
user names and passwords on the DSM-G600 that your computers already
use?

I can, but how can this help if XP Home only defaults to the user name
"Guest"? And considering it works in Pro and not in Home, how can you fault
the box?
