Default Reading new hardware devices

I cannot read USB devices (digital camera, MP3 player) on Windows 98 - will
updgrading to Windows XP automatically eliminate this problem?

That's a YES! (most of the time).
You could update the appropriate drivers on W98, there's a good chance that
would help. Some USB devices give some trouble even on XP but you can
configure them in the Management Tools snap-in and do away with the problem.

That depends on what's causing the problem.

Most Windows 98-era computers are way underpowered to run Windows XP at all,
or if they can rut it, they will run it very slowly. It's unlikely that
upgrading will be a good solution unless you are also willing to upgrade
your hardware. And upgrading hardware often is not cost-effective, since you
may find that you can buy a whole new computer for not much more.

But before doing anything else, read here:

You have to download USB drivers for the USB devices when using Win 98.
See device MFG website for Win 98 USB drivers!!
