Default Free simple video editing software

Are there any free video editing software out there that are easy to use? I
need a video editor that can do simple things like taking a vcd .dat file and
splitting it into smaller segments so I can burn them into 2 or more separate
CD-Rs / CD-RWs. I would also need to cut out/trim some scenes or rearrange
the sequnce of the video in the VCD. I do not need advanced features like
special effects etc.

There are quite a number of video editors out there but most of the free
stuff are not very user-friendly especially to beginners. I am currently
trying to use VirtualDub. It is quite good and it does have all the features
I am looking for. Unfortunately, the interface is not very easy to use and it
can only save the edited file in .avi which takes up a lot of hd space for
large video files.
