I was wondering if there is a Windows patch to update Windows XP Pro
without installing SP2? If so, how can I get it? Last time I installed SP2 it crashed my Thinkpad, so am very reluctant to try installing it again. Thanks for any assistance. Jim |

Dear Tom;
Thank you very much, just what I was looking for. Could you help me with another problem? I have a wireless router hookup in the home, but did not have wireless security enabled. Our home network is say "homenetwork". Well, last night I went to Explorer: MY NETWORK PLACES ENTIRE NETWORK MICROSOFT WINDOWS NETWORK and much to my surprise in addition to HOMENETWORK someone had installed another network there, and I'm assuming they did this via the Router or the Wireless Access Point I have connected to the home network via ethernet cable. Anyway, I tried to delete the rogue network and it told me ACCESS DENIED. I then disabled the wireless card on my laptop, and the rogue network disappeared, so I assume someone used one of the wireless access points to set up this network somehow. Anyway, I'm going to set up wireless security now, but was wondering if it should happen again, under XP Pro, how would one delete or disable or track down the rogue network? We are in the aftermath of Katrina and I suspect some knowledgeable person found my router or WAP and jumped right in. Tom;
I installed the update but it did not do the job, so bit the bullet and installed SP2 again, and apparently so far there are no issues like the first time I tried it when it first came out. Anyway, the network is now secured using WEP, but I am still wondering how to use the more secure WAP shared. Can you point me in the right direction on how to use this mode? Make sure you have an Access point that uses WPA security. Also make sure
your WLAN drivers support WPA. Basically, set the passkey on your Access point using WPA security. Then enter that same passkey on the Windows XP machine (similar to using WEP). -- Gary Tsang Microsoft MVP - Windows XP Shell/User http://www.microsoft.com/mvp "Jim" <wdxp@cox.net> wrote in message news:n8hqk1lm0hr1mk7orf4i46pfbhpncp0qav@4ax.com... > Tom; > > I installed the update but it did not do the job, so bit the bullet > and installed SP2 again, and apparently so far there are no issues > like the first time I tried it when it first came out. > > Anyway, the network is now secured using WEP, but I am still wondering > how to use the more secure WAP shared. Barb Bowman's article at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u..._03july28.mspx is a good place to start. -- Tom Porterfield MS-MVP Windows http://support.telop.org Please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup only. |

I suspect you could no longer delete it because it no longer existed, it had been disconnected. As you saw, removing the wireless card was enough to get rid of the entry from network places. To prevent this in the future, keep your wireless network secured, which of course you are already working on doing. -- Tom Porterfield MS-MVP Windows |
