Default Upgrade to XP

Just upgraded from Windows ME to XP Home, first off everything seemed OK
but shortly after completing upgrade everything hung up and pc would not
respond.

Re-installed XP, now it works but all previous programmes appear to
have been uninstalled - the files are still there, as is data, but
desktop is blank and not much will run.

I haven't been able to find any uninstall option for XP to get back to
ME.

Is there anything I can do to "recover" some sense of normality and get
my previously installed programmes running? Some of these were
internet downloads/upgrades and registration keys, etc for these were
in e-mails (Outlook) that I have not been able to find in my new,
rather empty, XP world.

Pilot172 in a spin.....
