Hi everyone,
I need some help. I have Windows XP Home Edition at my home. I am the only user. I just got RoadRunner about a month ago. Here is my problem. After about I would say 4 hours something causes my RoadRunner to disconnect I think. When I click on Internet Explorer my home page won't load. I get that Page Unavailable or Need to check your browser settings message. So I then log off Windows and log back on and my connection picks up again. I have tried many many things. I made sure that my Power Options were correct in that the monitor or hard drive never shuts down. So any ideas? It's a pain in the butt. I even tried disconnecting my modem to see if that helped after I reconnected it. It didn't. Please help! Thanks! |

Go to the Control Panel System applet, Hardware, Device Manager. Expand Network Adapters and find the one you are using to connect to the cable modem. Double-click it to get its Properties. On the power management tab, uncheck "Allow Windows to turn off this device when not in use". Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" MS-MVP Windows - Shell/User |

May need to adjust power options per device. Example, if using a USB modem, adjust power options for the USB connections. To do this: Device Manager> Properties for device. Look for a "Power Management" page. Remove check from "allow computer to turn off this device to save power." -- Sharon F MS-MVP ~ Windows Shell/User |

Ok I came home at lunch and did what you both told me to do. I went to the
control panel, system, device manager and then to network adapter, properties and then power management and unchecked the box. Then I went back to work. When I came home about 5 hours later I still had the same problem where my internet wouldn't come up. I had to log off and log on again. What is going on? Did I need to reboot my system for this change to have taken effect? It's really driving me nuts!!! Please help again if you wouldn't mind. Thanks! Karen Things to try, making only one change at a time and testing after each change: 1. Swap out the ethernet cable for a new one. 2. Swap out the network card for a known-working one. If you are using an onboard ethernet adapter, add a PCI network card. 3. Are both the computer and the cable modem in an area where they get good air circulation? Possibly one or the other is overheating. Feel the cable modem. If it is more than just warm, get your cable company to replace it.
