Windows XP Home Edition SP1
I'm finally going to update to SP2. I understand it has a built in firewall. I use Zone Alarm Free edition now. I think the SP2 firewall and Zone Alarm conflict. I'm inclined to disable the SP2 firewall after installation and use Zone Alarm (It works well and I'm used to it) If they conflict, how do I handle this on installation of SP2? Do I have to disable ZA before updating, after updating, or do I select some option on installation of SP2 to not install the firewall in SP2? I'm concerned that I will update to SP2 and the computer and/or either firewall won't function and the whole house of cards will come crashing. How do I handle this pro-actively? Thanks. Chet |

If you are running the latest version of ZA, XP SP2 will automatically detect that and the SP2 firewall will be disabled, nothing for you to do. -- Tom Porterfield MS-MVP Windows http://support.telop.org Please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup only. |

Disable Zonealarm at the point where you do the SP2 upgrade.. when finished,
re-enable Zonealarm, and then check in Windows Firewall (in Control Panel) that the SP2 firewall is disabled.. It is important that your computer is problem free before installing SP2.. run SpyBot S&D, AdawareSE, SpywareBlaster and CWShredder to rid it of spyware.. disconnect all devices other than screen, keyboard and mouse.. backup all files that you can't easily replace from existing media in your possession.. -- Mike Hall MVP - Windows Shell/User "CGB" <nospam@nospam.net> wrote in message news:efNAEGN0FHA.3780@TK2MSFTNGP12.phx.gbl... > Windows XP Home Edition SP1 > I'm finally going to update to SP2. Thanks to Tom and Mike. I would not have thought about disconnecting other
devices, in my case a scanner and a printer. I regularly use the SpyBot S&D, AdawareSE, SpywareBlaster and CWShredder programs. I have learned FWIW that with the "immunize" activated win SpyBot, troubles can occur and I un-immunize while installing new stuff. Don't know if you've come across that or not. Chet |
