Several ways, including (a) installing the Lotus word processing
application into Windows XP or (b) converting the Lotus word file
into something that can be read by an existing application already
present or installed in Windows XP. The built-in Windows XP simple
word processing programs, Wordpad or Notepad, might not be able to
read the Lotus word file.

Office can't either. It can Read AmiPro documents but not Lotus (Ami is an earlier version).

Lotus Word Pro format, is not currently supported by MS, but if you have
installed lotus word pro, you can do it following the instructions
related in this kb article.

or using third-party tools...

The fact that it's an XP environment is irrelevant. The ability to read a
particular word processing format depends on what application you're trying
to read it with, not on the operating system.

know next to nothing aabout y Lotus files, but I asume there are several
different formats, depending on what particular Lotus product created them,
and what version. Your first step should be to find out the name of the
program, and the version.

You can probably install the particular Lotus program under XP, or if you
can't, many other word processing programs provide the ability to read and
convert from a variety of other formats. I can't be more specific about
which ones because I don't know what particular Lotus format you need, and
because I don't know the conversion capabilities of all the word processors.
But if I were you, after finding out exactly what you mneeded, I would go to
the web sites of the major word processors (Microsoft Word,WordPerfect,
etc.) to see what they can handle.

MS won't convert (they decided not to) Lotus branded versions of Ami Pro but will with optional convertors convert Ami branded Ami Pro. Lotus bought it from Ami.
