Please advise if any kind soul could explain in "non Teckie" language how to
fix this window message - this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. create an associate in the folder options control panel? It popped open when I tried to open an attachment (ppg or something like it) to an email? -- Desperate middle aged Newbie.. |

Generally it means you dont have an app/program on your PC that can
open/read the attachment we need to know the file suffix exactly eg 'or something like that' is no good "Volcano" <Volcano@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news 9F6FA73-1EF8-442C-B900-394A4E024BF0@microsoft.com...> Please advise if any kind soul could explain in "non Teckie" language how to > fix this window message - this file does not have a program associated with > it for performing this action. create an associate in the folder options > control panel? It was probably a PPT or PPS file, which means PowerPoint. You do
not need the entire PowerPoint app for that will run into a few bucks. All you probably need to open the file is the PowerPoint Viewer. You can download the free viewer here. When you double-click a file (whether in an attachment or elsewhere) Windows tries to open it with the appropriate program--for example a .txt file will open in Notepad, a a .jpg file in Paint, a .wav file in Media Player. It knows which program to use because it has something called an "association." An association is a link between a file extension (the last three characters of the file name, like .txt, .jpg, or .wav) and a particular program. In general, when you install a program, it creates the associations you need to use it. So if you install Word, an association will be created between ..doc files and Word. You are trying to open a file for which no association exists on your computer. That normally means simply that you don't have an appropriate program istalled to access it. By the way, when you attempt to open a file recived in an E-mail attachment, especially when you don't know what it is, you are performing one of the most dangerous acts possible on your computer. This is how most viruses and other nasties spread. -- Ken Blake Please reply to the newsgroup |
