Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories. Do you see an icon for Windows
Explorer?

If not:

Right-click on your desktop and select New > Shortcut.
Type this in the box: c:\windows\explorer.exe
Click on Next.
Name the shortcut Windows Explorer.
Click on Finish.

Firstly, I dought you lost it, more likly windows lost it since it
dose have suicidal tendencies.

Secondly, try this: Open task manager (etiehr by ctrl+shift+esc or
ctrl+alt+del) of then run dialog (file > run) and type explorer.

Is it possible to stop the expanding of the folder when selected? That
is, not show it's subfolders in the left pane?

"WinKey+E"
If explorer isn’t running that won’t work, that is an explorer hot
key.
