Dell 4550, Win XP Home. It came with MS Word 2002.
Worked fine til few weeks ago. Now, when I log in, desktop appears, and I get small window- Windows Installer Preparing to install MS Word 2002. Then: Please wait while Windows configures MS Word 2002. Then it asks for the Word disk. If I close or cancel the little windows, everythging is normal. But Word 2002 is already installed and working. So why all of a sudden did it start trying to install it on startup? Brad |

Still trying to figure out what it does. I'm chicken with new programs. I just had to remove OpenOffice-I installed it, apparently missed something,, and MS Word docs changed to (OpenOffice) Write and MS Word disappeared from "All Programs" list! MS Word reappeared after removing OpenOffice, and changed docs reverted to Word docs...whew. (Tho I still want OpenOffice, unless - or maybe even if - someone gives me Office. |

When you install open office a wizard will ask you
do you want to associate word, excel files with open office. Leave the options unselected. Then you should have no problems. Of course you will still be able to open word docs with open office. I've seen the installer for Office appear when: - a new user logs on for the first time - a part of Office needs to be added that wasn't included in the original install. This is the "install on first use" feature in Office setup. -an Office program is damaged and needs repairing If I understand you correctly, you uninstalled a program that left an office document type orphaned. Perhaps the installer was appearing to perform an auto-repair? -- Sharon F MS-MVP ~ Windows Shell/User |
