Default can't get JAVA to behave with my XP pro

Hello forum and OK here goes,

SHORT VERSION, Java 1.5 won't load and work with my XP pro OS, IE 6. I Tried
many approaches and attempted fixes and setting changes, but it seems to be a
weak spot in my OS, as non-professional as that sounds. Any deep dark
secrets about Java loading or using Java 1.5 ? For a more in depth
explanation, see below.

VERY LONG VERSION

I'm a little more than a novice with computers, (about 3 yrs total PC time:
I help some friends occasionally that need minor tune ups, software installs,
hardware installs/configs etc). I got pretty good using/fixing low level 98
problems. I've had XP for about a year and am just starting to learn it's
features better. I have some beginner registry experience, earned an A+. I
read a lot and love these machines, started late, so much to learn.......bla
bla..my favorite sayings are......no, just kidding..

The trading platform (small account-PowerEtradePro,) that I use has worked
fine until Monday morning. It uses Java. I had been using ver 1_3_ x? and I
believe a PowerPro update a few months ago required and installed J2SE
runtime Env..5.0 Update 5 to ver 1.3.x.

I needlessly uninstalled Etrade this morning because of mis-thinking that it
was frozen because of last nights changes and tweaks and optimizing that I
was doing. I worked with Windows KBs XP tune up suggestions and also used
CableNut to optimize my cable connection, and also used MVP (ahuma) tweaks. I
found and removed some standard spyware files with different free software.

Because of the time change last night, the market was closed at 6:45AM and I
thought that my charts were frozen (Phx doesnt' change and I don't watch much
TV and never got the time change reminder from the news). It dawned on me
that the market was just closed a millesecond after I removed the software.
(If I could only have that second to re-live)., , duh, embarrassing, but I'm
comin' clean !! Dumbo move, but that's what happened.

I thought I could uninstall and install and everythng would be fine.So the
new Java version in use now seems to be Java 1.5 , but something is
preventing my computer from using it. (like it wouldn't accept 1.4 about a
year ago and the work-around was to use 1.3). Etrade support said that I
have to have 1.5 installed for it to work at this time, although on Friday, 1.
3 worked fine, I guess with the update 5 installed on top of it..

I worked with 3 levels of their help desk today, and I might get more info
on a a follow up call from them in AM, if he has any new ideas. (Please
bear with the length of this explanation, but it may help the more I list).
If you've read this far, I really appreciate it.

The help desk levels put me through all the standard checks. Browser
security settings , firewall, I bypassed my router for them when I had a
proxy error message, changed the TIF cache settings back to 2000MB from 80,
turned on Cookies, cleared online/offline cache, turned off XP pop up blocker,
turned off XP Firewall, (yikes), tried different internet options and
defaults etc etc even installed Firefox one time after another 'proxy
settings' error box, (but Firefox wouldn't ever connect to their server for
some reason, which may or may not be related to this Java problem).

This is the only problem I've ever had with any software or hardware
installations since I store bought this Dell about a year and a half ago.

Btw, last night after all the optimizing etc., my computer's response times
seemed to be about 30+% faster opening windows and way faster opening
websites too: they seemed to appear simutaneouslyI with releasing the mouse
click. Blazing speed, Was a happy boy. Many thanks to the tune up articles
on this website. Control panel opens in less than a second. (dell 8300 3.
0/1GBRAM, 800fsb, sata110 something). This seems to eliminate the theory that
what I tweaked negatively affected my computer overall. Maybe it did, or
maybe it didn't, or maybe it's the same underlying unresolved problem that I
had a year ago, when I couldn't use1.4 either. It's a factory installed OS
that came with the box.

Why, Why, Why did I have to uninstall my program.....achhhhhhhhkkk !!!!
(sorry). Live and learn, ya say ? Hopefully !!

I also tried using XP system restore, to a few days ago, before I did any
tweaking, and 1.3 and the Java webstart entry, and the Update 5 were back in
Add/Remove programs, so I presume that they were installed (correctly?I don't
know, I know so little!), but when I tried to open PowerETrade, the process
didn't go very far: the Java window just closed by itself with no fanfare or
error message: nothing appeared, like I never tried to open anything. On a
call back, the Level 3 tech had me go thru the same hoops as the Level 2 tech,
and we also deleted the Java folders under Program Files. We installed 1.5
again and had the same result.

Right now, when I click on a desktop shortcut for PowerEtrade or use the
lauch button from the etrade website, I get the login screen. I log on and
it goes to the Java Web Start 'checking latest version' box, and then a
download error box. I just went to the Java Website and it verified that I
have: Java Runtime Vendor: Sun Microsystems Inc.:Java Runtime Version, 1.5.
0_05 installed (with a congratulations) Thanks, I needed that.

In control panel add/remove programs, there is only one entry, not the 3 that
used to be there when using 1.3v, when everythng working perfectly for the
last year. There isn't the webstart entry or a 2nd Runtime 1.5 version
entry. There is only J2SE Runtime Env..5.0 Update 5. No matter how I try to
launch my software, it goes to the same checking version message box, with a
double' blinking status bar, which eventually goes to the 'unable to load'
error box. I've used ad-aware, spybot S&D, MS beta syware remover, and Trend
Antispyware free ver, and my computer seems to be pretty free of bugs and
wares, (also AVG), and like I mentioned, this computer seems to run very
well with ALL other software and hardware functions. All spyware and AV
programs, as far as I know, are turned off. There is nothing in W.Task Mgr
processes that seems to be related to Sygate Personal Firewall or AVG, or
Spybot or AdAware. I removed MS beta antispyware....it didn't seem to find
anything even though some websites give it high marks. Interestingly enough,
there is a Java icon (coffee cup) in the system tray with only 2 others, the
network and speaker icons When clicked on, it says {{{Java 2 platform
standard edition, ver 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_05-b05)}}} Also, a running "About
Java" is present in WTM applications, but nothing that seems to be related
to Java is in WTM processes ) Nothing with the letter "j" in it, anyway.

That's all folks! I know this was a crush to read, but maybe someone can
give some expert advice.

It would be great to hear "Hey novice dude mr. bode wellner (an irony of a
name at this juncture), "THIS" is what is wrong !" Just do THIS !!! *.*

Anyone have any "Try THIS's ? "

Did I forget to mention anything ?

thx, bode :-)

Since this concerns going on-line, have you got any extra toolbars installed
in Internet Explorer - ones that have popup blocking or spyware blocking. I
use one of these and there are some pages I go to where I just have to turn
it off to view the web page.

Default Re: can't get JAVA to behave with my XP pro

Thanks for the reply.

Google Toolbar did appear in add/remove programs, but one of the help desk
ideas was to remove it. I removed it but it didn't help this problem trying
to get Java to work.

Can it be a corrupted file in the OS or another OS issue ?

Do you think a hijackthis log would reveal an issue ? I've heard about that
software but have never used it.

I read about XP's chkdsk which seemed to work well for some situations. I
tried it last night with a "/f" trigger and it said my volume was locked and
offered to do it next reboot. It ran on the next reboot, and found a few
things and I believe it said it fixed them, (it flashed by pretty quickly in
the blue DOS like screen before the OS loaded. No help.

I've heard about using SFC. I read about it at the MS website and ran it,
using the OS disk when it asked for it. It took about 10+ minutes. The
progress window disappeared when it was finished, but the DOS window that I
ran it from didn't give any indication of anything right or wrong. Not sure
if this indicates that nothing wrong was found with system files.

And also and lastly, while doing the research on using SFC, I ran into this
free scan by PC on Point. I ran it and it came up with 342 problems found:

application paths 3 problems found
shared program files 67 "
Add remove programs 1 " "
File Associations 37 " "
Complte Registry Scan 186 " "
Invalid shortcuts 48 " "

I was surprised that it found this many errors. (I think the file association
errors are .doc files transferred from a dying computer that won't open
because I don't have Word 6.0 on this computer.

It said it could fix 37 of the errors without the $39 enrollment charge, but
it didn't seem to want to do that when I tried, and I didn't want to spend
the the $39 for software that I don't know anything about.

Still trying things..

Hello Andrew, thx for your input. I found MJVM and will download it from here:

http://www.360vision.co.uk/java/

One question before I install this: should I uninstall J2SE Runtime
Environment 5.0 Update 5 with add/remove programs first ?

I noticed at the website below that Java permissions need to be "enabled" per
these instructions:
http://www.360vision.co.uk/java/java_enable.html

What may be something pertinent is that there are no MS VM entries when I
checked my security settings. Can this be a problem ?
