Default Router Problems

Am I missing something? I followed the directions to the T when trying to
network two computers. Do both computers have to have the same operating
system? They're both windows xp, anyway. Do I need to disable the virus
software? Should the second computer (the one I'm trying to connect to) need
to be shut off until everything has been processed from the main computer?
Every time I think I've cleared the test, the computer doesn't freeze up,
but I may as well go out and paint the house, because it doesn't budge. I
can close the program if I want and thats what I've done every time. Then, I
have to disconnect everything and start all over. Am I being impatient? Is
it normal to wait over 10 minutes for the settings to take place?
I just bought a DYNEX DX-E401 with enough ethernet cables for three
computers. I also have an external DSL Westell modem. I can't figure out
what to do next and I'm pretty ignorant after I fail at following
directions... Thanks anyone!
