OK, so we know what 'kernel' is - so why on my laptop did I get a
message 'Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter device preventing standby?
Update this driver?' - can I have that in english please?

I have no personal experience with that message but Googling on it brings
543 hits. If I were you, I'd start there.
