What is this and would it control my multiple card reader that no longer
works?? Within this section on the device manager there is a unknown dervice,
what should i do about this??

My experience with "plug & play" USB devices in XP Home. is different than on a W98 1st Ed PC. You cannot just "unplug" it, as you did in Win9x/ME. You need to use the "Safely Remove Hardware Feature", first.

You will need to the following:
1. If the "bad" card reader is disconnected already, or it is not recognized by the PC.
2. Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs> Delete Card Reader Program, if installed.
3. Control Panel> System> Hardware tab> Device> Expand USB controller line> Right click each USB Root Hub one by one> Properties> Power tab> Look and see if there is a listing for the card reader there. It might be listed as "Removable Drive". If it is there click on the driver tab> Select to Remove it.
4. Still in the Device Manager Right click the item with the Yellow exclamation mark> Select to Remove it.
5. Reboot PC, let it reinstall any drivers that it needs to. Then check the device manager
6. Again, in the future, use the "Safely Remove Hardware wizard", when disconnecting USB devices from your PC. Even if you are just moving the plug to another USB port on the PC.
a. With the USB device on> You may need to click arrow in to show hidden icons in taskbar.
b. Double click Safely Remove Hardware icon.
c. Select the USB device> Press Stop button> Turn off PC and device> Unplug USB device> Reboot PC.
7. If you plan to remove or moving to a different USB port, a USB mouse and keyboard, consider removing or moving the mouse first. Then Reboot the PC, and remove or move the keyboard plug next. Or better yet if you have a old PS/2 mouse laying around, connect it to your PC, and use for this task, it would make things easier.
