I tried to defrag my C drive and XP Pro reports that I have 4% free space and
it will not work properly. I have gone through the drive and deleted everything I can think of and I still only have 4% free. Can I move components of Documents and Settings to another partition or drive? I am thinking about My Documents and My Pictures, the two largest folders. Other than training my programs to find the new locations would I have any problems? Thanks in advance. -- John |

Hi John,

You can do this, just right click the "My Documents" folder and choose properties. There will be a button to move them or you will find it in the common tasks pane. Best done by opening Windows Explorer to the actual folder at C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Documents. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Associate Expert - WindowsXP Expert Zone www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone Windows help - www.rickrogers.org "John" <John@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:0E08DA56-3A64-43DA-8D24-8E215C3CCBCA@microsoft.com... >I tried to defrag my C drive and XP Pro reports that I have 4% free space >and > it will not work properly. It would be ideal if u havent already to run a disk cleanup and get rid of your temporary files, recycle bin files and older restore points when deleted can give you more space. You could also burn your snaps and music files etc on to CDs to make up room. Herez a link on clean up http://pcworld.about.com/magazine/2007p162id97442.htm Run chkdsk before you defragment. Also i guess there are some third party tools which defrag with less than 15% space on the drive ( the built in needs a minimum of 15%) -- xy2z |

Since deleting files normally moves them to the recycle bin, doing so doesn't free up any space unless you also empty the recycle bin. > Can I move components of Documents and Settings to another partition > or drive? Use TweakUI--go to the My Computer | Special Folders area. You'll need 15% free space in order to defrag.

You might also try to reduce the allocated Recycle Bin size (RB properties),
minimize the page file (2MB, for ex), reduce Temp Internet space (10MB or so); clean up older Sys Restore files and reduce the size of SR files kept.... Function of your hdd size, you might get the 15% -20% required by Defrag.
