My new Sony VAIO was supplied without any backup discs that would be used if
it were ever necessary to reinstall or repair the OS or applications. Can I
make those myself? If not, how would such a problem be handled? Running XP
home SP2.

Forget it; I just found some instructions in something called the VAIO
Control
Center.

Better yet, buy an external hard drive and an imaging program (Acronis, for
ex).
Sooner or later you'll have to restore XP
