Default Restore vs Clean Install

Rather than do a Clean Install ever again: is it possible
to restore a backup of the "everything on my
computer" option and accomplish the same thing?

I copied a file (with subdirectories) on my c:drive,
renamed it, did a backup to my e:drive (removable),
deleted the renamed file from my c:drive, opened
the Restore Wizard and added the backup on the
e:drive to the catalog, and resored the backup file
from the e:drive to the c:drive.

Does this mean I could do a clean install (reformat)
using only the OS/CD for XP SP1 that came with the
PC and then restore a "healthy" copy of an "everything
on my pc" backup.

Thanks. A simple "NO" will do if appropriate.
BobW.

Hi Bob,

What you are trying to accomplish can not be done with System Restore.

You will need to look into disk imaging software to accomplish this.

Disk backup software: hard drive image backup program and cloning disk
with operation system

No.
Don't read any further as you have your answer requested. Other readers
interested, read further.
You're spinning your wheels, your method won't work at all. If it was that
simple, no would ever have to reinstall windows.

Find an imaging program that works with XP NTFS partitions that suits your
budget. And can restore from the location of your backup image if XP won't
work.
