Default *HELP* USB / 300gig HD

Dell is no help on this:

I purchased a 300gig HD (Maxtor) and a USB HD Drive Enclosure (Mad Dog
Multimedia) but when I connect the 300g hd to USB 1.1 or even 2.0
controller, Windows XP only sees the HD as 32 Gig.

How can I get Windows XP to see the maximum allowed by Windows XP or
the full 300gig ?

Format with NTFS.

(1) Format it with NTFS - drawback being you may not be able to use it on
all system you might attempt to.
(2) Format it FAT32 - NOT with Windows XP internal utilities - so that you
get a newer file system - but one more easily utilized by more systems.

Format larger than 32GB FAT32 within Windows XP with this utility:

Click on these things:

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Services > Computer
Management > Storage > Disk Management.

When you finally get to Disk Management, you should see something that looks
like this:

Right Click on the one that you should know to be the new drive. You will
format it that way.

BTW, I have had nothing but problems with MadDog hardware. I assume their
software is equally troublesome.

Are you sure you have reformatted it? This happens to mine all the time. I
delete stuff off it, but the drive capacity does not change. Therefore I
have to reformat to get the full capacity to show again.

Has your drive ever shown the right size?

Did you re-initialize it in Disk Manager first?

If you format it with that utility I pointed to to FAT32 - what happens?
Are you up-to-date with patches for Windows XP (Service Pack 2, etc.)?

Remember - you are not going to get 300GB formatted out of this drive -
admittedly you should get significantly more than 32GB - but you are not
actually going to have 300GB either. heh

In addition to the suggestions made by a number of responders to your
query...
Many Maxtor hard drives come with a jumper setting that limits the capacity
of the hard drive to 32 GB for reasons that we won't go into at this time.
If your HD has this jumper setting, is it possible that you inadvertently
set it with that limitation?

BTW, echoing the comments made by one of the responders re the Mad Dog USB
enclosure you're using, our experience with Mad Dog products has also been
quite negative. At least with respect to their optical drives. But we've no
experience with their USB enclosures.

Thanks everyone! I'll try it in a different enclosure. btw, I tried
it connected directly to the motherboard and it worked fine which makes
me suspect the Mad Dog enclosure as well.

This little utility works great, might be easier to use too..
