Password

Hi,

Can someone please help me, I am trying to set a boot/startup password. I
have been told this is the only way of stopping anyone gaining access to my
pc. I have been told that this will ask me for a password as soon as I turn
my pc on, which is what I want as my son has the knowledge of getting round
user account passwords.

If he has the knowledge to get round user account passwords, then he'll
probably reset the bios on the computer after you have set a bios password.
I think that's what you want to do. You need to access the BIOS on your
computer and setup the password there, but as I said, it's just as easy to
delete change.

Hi,
If you really want to prevent access to your pc it is impossible to do
without a 3rd party solution, even in XP Pro. There are many around but not
all are foolproof.

You'll need to set this password in the system BIOS. Right when you turn on
your PC, it us usually F2 or DEL key to enter the BIOS. All your son needs
to do is reset the BIOS. Not too dificult.

The only what to really stop your son from starting up the computer is to
take away the power cord.

Or take away the monitor power cord.

I have placed a password in the bios, but it doesn't ask me for it on start
up?

I have a HP Pavilion m7081.uk. I really need to stop him from getting on the
pc.

Hi,
As already pointed out, the password in the bios is removed easily by
resetting the bios.
To set the password you need to Set the password in 2 places.
1 set the passowrd in the Advanced bios settings. Set to system
2 set the user and supervisor passwords. "User" prevents access to the
system and "Supervisor" prevents access to the bios.

3rd party software is way to go tho....

If you are not requested to enter a password immediately upon starting
the computer, you didn't do it right. First, let me tell you that any
computer can be gotten into by someone who has 1) physical access; 2)
skills; 3) a little time; 4) a few tools. Every time a parent posts a
question like this - and you can do a Google Groups search and see how
many times that is (lots) - those of us in the tech business carefully
point out that this is really not a problem with a technical solution.
This is a parent-child-family problem that you need to address in Real
Life(tm) and posting in a newsgroup won't help.

That said, here are a few steps you can take to control your computer:

1. Set a password in the BIOS in two places: a password to start the
operating system (Windows) and a password to change anything in the
BIOS (Setup).

2. In the BIOS, change the boot order to hard drive first.

3. Create strong passwords in Windows, including one for the
Administrator account. Make any user accounts other than yourself
Limited accounts.

If you have any difficulty in doing any of the above, have a
professional computer person set you up and show you how easy it is to
get into a computer running any operating system. This is not a
Windows-only issue; that's just the way computers are. Good luck.
