Default CD not recognized when inserted

I have lost the ability to copy a file to CD-RW on my Windows XP Pro OS using
the "send to" command. I receive a message stating that there is no CD in the
drive when in fact, there is. Reinserting does not solve the problem. By
using NERO, I have been able to back-up to CD; however, this is a
time-consuming work around and still leaves me with an unacceptable loss of
functionality.

Some background info:
1) According to PC Doctor and Device Manager, this device is working properly.
2) Somewhere within Computer Management (forgot where exactly), I recieved
this info: Device # cannot be deternined. Device failed to configure.
3) All previously saved data is accessable (including video and music) from
the CD.
4) All drivers are up-to-date.
5) I am using the same media.
6) I have recently added 1 Admin. account and 2 Limited accounts.
7) My original account malfunctions with the "send to" command.
8) No other configuration changes have been made.
My question to you is whether the expense of replacing the unit is warranted
or is there something I can do to solve this problem. All suggestions will
be gratefully accepted. Thank you.

All CD-RW media - or have you only tried one? And if so - what happens if
you performa a full format on the CD-RW in question?

I have a similar sounding prob. Last night I was burning a DVD on +R. Now I
had been burning successfully all morn, on -RW.
I didn't jot the error down, but it was something about time and/or
protection.
Now it does not recognize CD or DVD R or RW.

I spoke to HP, they had me remove the dirvers and have Windows XP refind it.
When that didn't work they asked me to del. *filters* from a key in the
registry. That failed. They then asked me to reseat the power and ribbon
cable. Also no good.
So now they are going to have me send the pc in.

Didn't want to have to go this route, but pc is under wty. I figure let them
troubleshoot it. Hell I pd. enough for it.
