Default Upgarding from Xp Home to XP Pro

I have a fully installed and up to date installation of XP home. i have just
purchased XP Pro but when I try to install (upgrade) it doesn't give me an
upgrade option and says that the version I am trying to install is older than
the one already installed. Is this becuase my XP home has PS2 and the XP Pro
does not have SP2? If so what can I do about it?

Thanks in anticipation. Peter

Hi

Yes, that error message does mean that you have SP2 installed at the moment
and the XP Pro CD doesn't have SP2 included on it. You can slipstream the
XP Pro CD so as to install without having to revert to SP1 first:

Thanks Denny this looks like it is what I want. Never done slipstreaming
before so just a couple of questions:

I presumably need to combine the files on my XP Pro CD with SP2, where do I
get SP2 from?

Are there any other components I need on this ISO file?

Thanks ...................... Peter

Hi

You'll need the SP2 file, which can be ordered via a CD:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

For the ISO file, you will need a CD burning program, such as:

Roxio - http://www.roxio.com/en/products/emc/index.jhtml
Nero - http://www.nero.com/eng/index.html

You will need to create a new XP Pro CD that has Service Pack 2
slipstreamed into it. In addition to your XP Pro Upgrade CD you will
need:

1. The full XP Service Pack 2 download from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

2. A CD or DVD writer drive and a blank CD.

3. Slipstreaming software such as nlite (free) from
http://www.nliteos.com/

4. Software to create a CD from the .ISO disk image file created by
nlite. The CD burning software that comes with most new drives, such
as Nero or Easy CD, usually has this capability.

Good luck

Thanks Ron - I'd lost that SP2 download link.

Thanks for the useful guidance and the links. I successfully slipstreamed SP2
onto Windows Xp Pro. Unfortunately right at the end of the installation
process it gave me an error to do with licensing but I forgot to record the
error message. The licence code I had entered for the XP Pro pruduct was
accepted OK. So I will have to reinstall and figure out what the licence
error meant.

Thanks again.................Peter
