Not an expert with CMOS selections.
Running Dell DIM 8100 P4 1.5GHz 768MB RDRAM bad drive F:120MB WD drive is outside normal specs - still runs though. new drive C:120MB WD EIDE set new HD to Master and bad to Slave Intent is to retrieve files from disk (if possible) and replace with 80GB HD for better backups than burning to CD each month. Fresh XP pro w/SP2 trying to add to new HD and run future 80GB as ghost drive. 1) I added drive and set M/S config with EIDE cable. 2) CMOS boot order set to only read CD-rom - A and C: drive are unchecked, as I'm trying to create the new C: dive 3) WIth reboot, Used WD HD disk to install and partition new drive. 4) After exiting WD HD config. loaded XP Pro disk and rebooted. 5) XP Pro loaded all through to Windows XP Pro Setup. It has been running for 2.5hrs. The hard drive light has been on the whole time, but the CD-rom hasn't clicked since this screen activated. Still says "Examining 114471MB Disk 0 at Id 1 on bus 0 atapi" Is this normal? I cancelled it already 2x after 1 hr and another at 1.5hrs. On/off won't function so I had to unplug her. Not what I want to keep doing. Is this thing going to load or do I have issues? Also should I have loaded as a single drive, no jumper, unhooking my bad HD so XP won't do anything to its data during my new load on the new HD? All my computer IT buds are out of town. I still have my modem and printers attached via usb ports. Do these need to be removed and added after XP loads? |

Not an expert, by any means, either. But, do know that not enabling DMA
will slow machine to a crawl.....PIO is enable by default and also with certain chipsets. Check the drive master/slave jumpers. Western Digital drives have different settings for master alone and master with slave connected. The other thing you could try is to disconnect the bad hard drive. It's possible that it's preventing the computer from accessing the good drive. > >Is this thing going to load or do I have issues? Jumper an cable the new drive as the primary master. 3. Boot computer and access BIOS. 4. Configure new hard drive 5. Set boot order to boot from CD before hard drive. 6. Put XP CD in CD drive. 7. Reboot and follow prompts. 8. If install is a success, shutdown. 9. Connect old drive as a Primary slave, Secondary master or Secondary slave depending on your system configuration. 10. Retrieve info 11. Format old drive and it should be fine for extra storage space. But you should probably run SpinRite on it to determine it's reliability. http://grc.com/default.htm For complete instructions on clean installing XP see my link in my signature below. -- Michael Stevens MS-MVP XP xpnews@bogusmichaelstevenstech.com http://www.michaelstevenstech.com For a better newsgroup experience. Thanks everyone for the info - I'm working on it now.
Michael - 1) Unhooked my orig HD and removed jumper to new one per WD direction sheet. 2) Rebooted - XP setup is at this step - how do I proceed? a-Format the partition (quick) b-Format the partition c-Leave current file system intact (no changes) The threads i've read say do the quick and let XP format the rest of the new HD when its running. Thanks again for all the help everyone. dz "Michael Stevens" wrote: > In news:53885E93-E829-45B0-A221-21CECE0FE2DC@microsoft.com, > dz <dz@discussions.microsoft.com> replied with a ;-) > > Not an expert with CMOS selections. > > Running Dell DIM 8100 P4 1.5GHz > > 768MB RDRAM > > bad drive F:120MB WD drive is outside normal specs - still runs > > though. > > new drive C:120MB WD > > EIDE set new HD to Master and bad to Slave > > > > Intent is to retrieve files from disk (if possible) and replace with > > 80GB HD for better backups than burning to CD each month. Disconnect old hard drive.
Replace the ide ribbon cable with a new, current 80 wire version. Remove jumper or set jumper per WD specs for master alone. Boot from XP CD. Remove the partition previously installed. Install a new partition, the installation will set the partition primary and active automatically, and will format it without user input. Proceed with the installation. Verify the installation. Get the WD software for verifying/checking WD hard drives at their website. Install to floppy or boot CD as needed. Disconnect the new hard drive, set the new hard drive jumpers as the new one. Boot from the WD media and check the drive. Remap if needed due to bad blocks. Configure both drives with jumpers master and slave, the new drive as master on primary. Get whatever data you need off the old drive. Boot from the WD media again. Write zeroes to it. Partition it in XP which will format it as well. There are reasons for the specific order I've provided. Do not try to shortcut. -- Jonny "dz" <dz@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:53885E93-E829-45B0-A221-21CECE0FE2DC@microsoft.com... > Not an expert with CMOS selections. > Running Dell DIM 8100 P4 1.5GHz > 768MB RDRAM > bad drive F:120MB WD drive is outside normal specs - still runs though. > new drive C:120MB WD > EIDE set new HD to Master and bad to Slave > > Intent is to retrieve files from disk (if possible) and replace with 80GB HD > for better backups than burning to CD each month.
