Default stop error on boot after chkdsk

Hi All,
XP Pro and SP2 with all updates installed.AV and firewall in place.
I ran a scandisk and of course was asked if I wanted to schedule at the next
boot. Sure I said.
Bad idea. System boots and runs through 5 phases of checkdisk and the comes
up with a stop error 0x00000071. I tried a repair and still won't boot. I
can't boot to safe mode or last good configuration either. Searched ms faq's
etc. and no joy. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

This is closest I could find. Substitute Windows XP directory for Win 2000.
You receive a "STOP 0x00000071" error message after you install the 811493
(MS03-013) security update on your Windows 2000 Professional-based computer

This link explains what phase 5 is:
http://snipurl.com/l58v

Try HD Tune (freeware). Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on C:\ under Drive letter
and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Also do a full surface scan with HD Tune.

Hope this helps.

Red Stripe

I would still run a full scan using HD Tune as a new installation of
Windows XP may not have resolved your problem. The signs are
a hardware and not a software problem.

Gerry,
FYI
I just completed a format and reinstalled apps. patches. updates etc. I ran
HD Tune and the HD is okay.Thought I'd be brave and run a chkdsk again. It
came up with the same error again but I was able to boot last good
configuration.
I'm going to do some more checking and see what I can figure out.
