Is there any way to make number lock set to be locked on at sign-on without
programing my computer? Mine does that, but the others in my office wish theirs did also. A lot of users wouldn't touch those instruction with a ten foot pole. Surely Microsoft could add that option to keyboard options or preferences. -- SKS "Bruce Chambers" wrote: > ken wrote: > > Hi, > > > > Does anyone know how to set the number lock on when booting up in XP? > > The bios has been told to set it, but XP cancels it again > > > WinXP, like its predecessors WinNT and Win2K, by design, ignores > the BIOS settings for the NumLock key as a standard security feature. > (I'm afraid I can't remember the "security" issue initially addressed.) > By default, the NumLock key is turned off as WinXP starts, and keeps > it off until someone logs in and initializes a user profile. By "programming my computer" I assume you mean by following the instructions here: How to Set the NUM LOCK State at Logon in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;314879 If those instructions are too difficult and you *must* have numlock on *before* you log on, then I'm afraid that you are out of luck with *any* modern operating system. This is not a Windows XP issue; other modern operating systems such as Linux work the same way. The BIOS setting for numlock is ignored. If you are talking about having the operating system remember your numlock preferences *after* you've logged on, then simply log in and set numlock the way you want. Windows XP (and Linux) will remember the user's preference. It is rare that a workstation needs to have numlock on or off *before* log on; the need for that is usually only because specialized software must run before log on.
