Default find old setup files lost

I unplug then re-plug some hardware and xp wants to set it up again
automatically. This is usb hardware stuff. It can't find the files for
anything anymore. For some reason that data is all screwed up. However
the right files are right in system32 etc. If I do a search for them I
find them right away.

1. Why doesn't xp just search for them and find them?

2. How do I get xp's data base of these files corrected? I've tried
reinstalling the hardware but it doesn't help.

Thanks

John

John,

System File Checker (SFC) verifies the integrity of system files. After
scanning for altered files, it offers to restore damaged files. If a
file is found to be damaged, SFC prompts you to restore the original
file. SFC can also be configured to notify you of changed and deleted
files.

You can use SFC to:
· Scan system files for damaged, missing, or changed files.
· Extract original Windows system files.
· Track changes to the system and identify altered files.

1. Put your Windows CDROM into your main CDROM Drive
2. Start
3. Run
4. Sfc /scannow

Hope this helps

John

What is the device you wish to connect to a USB port?

Windows XP drivers may not be all that is needed. You
may need third party drivers.

You may need to load software first and then browse to
the drivers when you Add Hardware.

Hope this helps.

That ran fine. The files it can't find aren't for the system. They are
for the mouse driver, the printer driver and so on. They are in the
right place, xp just doesn't know where they are. When I boot and choose
auto-install it says it can't find the files. But they are right where
they should be.

John

Please see my other post. Are you rebuilding after a clean install of
Windows XP?

Use an old non-USB keyboard and mouse to get the system working.

Is this the machine you are working on?

I unplugg the machine so I can plug in another one from my office and
upgrade. My office doesn't have internet. Then, when I plug the original
machine back in it can't setup the programs for wireless mouse, midi
stuff etc.

My office machine has no trouble.

I press automatic for the setup but it comes up with, "Can't find..."
and it is some dll files. But those files are right in system32 where
they should be. Somehow my xp pro has learned to look in the wrong
places for these files for re-installing. How could I teach it the right
places?

thanks

John

Windows Drivers are stored in the c:\windows\inf directory. If you go
to start run and type in inf it will load the folder for you.

Try pointing your system to that folder when it asks fro a driver
